Softball completes series sweep at Villanova

VILLANOVA, Penn. – The UConn softball shutout the Villanova Wildcats 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at the Villanova Softball Complex. Pitching led the way for the Huskies keeping the Wildcats scoreless, earning their fifth shutout win of the season.
Hope Jenkins started for the Huskies in the circle, only facing two batters in the first inning before she was pulled for Payton Kinney. Kinney was dominant for the Huskies going six innings striking out seven, only giving up two hits, and earning her seventh win of the season.
UConn scored the game's only run in the first inning off the bat of Jana Sanden. She hit a single down the left field line scoring Lexi Hastings, making it 1-0 Huskies. Sanden led the Huskies with five runs batted in on the weekend adding to her team high of 23 on the season.
Villanova threatened to score in the first two innings loading the bases in both innings. Kinney came up big in the circle getting three straight outs in the first inning to get out of the jam. The Huskies stranded twelve Villanova base runners in the game.
Meghan O'Neil came on to close out the win for the Huskies earning her second save of the season.
UConn earns their first series sweep of the season moving to 9-3 in the BIG EAST and 20-10 overall.
The Huskies will return home this week with a pair of midweek matchups against Fairfield on Tuesday and UMASS on Wednesday. Click here to buy tickets.
