No. 9 HookC Wins Third Striaght BIG EAST Regular Season Title

OMAHA - The No. 9 UConn baseball team (40-13, 15-5 BIG EAST) run-ruled Creighton (25-23, 10-11 BIG EAST), 10-0, in eight innings on Saturday afternoon at Charles Schwab Field to capture the program's third-straight BIG EAST regular season championship.Â
The championship is the ninth BIG EAST Championship overall and fourth regular season BIG EAST title (2011, 2021, 2022, 2023).Â
The Huskies also made history by winning 40 regular season games in back-to-back seasons, the first time that has ever been accomplished in program history.Â
The Huskies scored in six-straight innings to secure its 12th-straight series win of the season and finish off a regular season that saw the Huskies win 12 series and split two to begin the year.Â
UConn got the scoring going in the third with an RBI single from Paul Tammaro. Ben Huber followed with his team-leading 14th home run of the year to make it 3-0 Huskies.Â
The Huskies were a perfect 6-6 in shutdown innings on Saturday with the UConn pitching staff securing its third shutout of season.Â
Ian Cooke got the start today and fired two shutout frames with no hits allowed and three strikeouts. The New Milford, Conn. native had to exit in the bottom of the third with an injury.
Devin Kirby came out of the pen and tossed 2.1 shutout frames to move his ERA to 1.20 in seven BIG EAST appearances this season.
Tommy Ellisen followed Kirby with 1.2 innings shutout frames and left the game with a pair of runners on and no outs in the seventh.Â
Brady Afthim stranded both runners in the seventh and then closed out the ballgame with a 1-2-3 eighth inning.Â
Matt Garbowski recorded his second multi-hit game of the weekend and posted a career-high four runs batted in including a dagger two-out, two-run single in the fifth inning to balloon the lead to 7-0.Â
Five Huskies secured multi-hit efforts including Dominic Freeberger logging his team-high 27th mult-hit game.
UConn will be the No. 1 seed in the upcoming BIG EAST Championship with an Opening Round game against fourth-seeded Georgetown at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May, 24.
