STORRS, Conn. – The UConn field hockey team (3-6, 0-2) took home a convincing win against BIG EAST opponent, Georgetown Hoyas, on Friday afternoon in Storrs. The Huskies returned home after a stint of road games over the past two weekends.
The scoring offense started slow for the Huskies in the first period, although they notched nine shots, six of which were on goal. Junior, Madi Herb, got the ball rolling in the second period with a goal off a rebound of a penalty corner to put UConn up 1-0 on the Hoyas as they entered halftime.
The Huskies came out strong in the second half, solidifying their win with a goal from sophomore, Sol Simone, in the third period and a pair of goals from grad student, Julianna Kratz in the final period of the game. UConn outshot Georgetown 29-4, as their goalkeeper, Ella Fahey stopped 17 shots from going in.
Freshman goalkeeper, Natalie McKenna, came up with two stops in the win, although she wasn't tested much in the goal as the UConn defense continuously stopped Georgetown on the offense. This marks the first shutout of McKenna's career with the Huskies.
UConn will host No.20 Delaware on Sunday at 12:00pm as they honor the 2013 Field Hockey National Championship squad, 10 years after they took home the trophy. The game versus the Blue Hens will be broadcast on UConn+.
