Softball falls in weekend finale at Marucci Classic

RALEIGH, N.C. – The UConn softball team dropped their final game at the Marucci Classic on Sunday morning, losing to North Dakota State, 3-1.
Payton Kinney got her second start of the season in the circle for the Huskies. She tossed five scoreless innings only giving up two hits with five strikeouts.
The game was a pitcher's duel through the first four innings with both teams being held scoreless by both starting pitchers.
Jana Sanden broke the deadlock in the fifth inning, hitting a solo home run to dead center, making it 1-0 Huskies. Sanden continues to stay red hot at the plate, homering in three consecutive days on the weekend.
Hope Jenkins came in relief for Kinney in the sixth inning, only facing five batters before being pulled for Meghan O'Neil who pitched the rest of the game in the circle for the Huskies.
North Dakota State responded with three runs in the sixth inning to put them ahead, 3-1.
UConn kept fighting until the end but could not find a key hit to tie or take the lead.
Up Next:
UConn travels to Clemson next weekend to play in the Clemson Classic. The Huskies will open the weekend against Ole Miss on Friday, February 23 at 11:00am.
