PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The UConn baseball team (8-12) was shutout, 3-0, in its series opener at Rutgers on a frigid Friday afternoon at Bainton Field.
Starting pitchers Gabe Van Emon and Justin Sinabaldi traded zeroes heading into the seventh inning.
In the bottom half of the seventh, Tony Santa Maria lifted a solo shot just out of reach of right fielder Jake Studley to break the scoreless tie.
The Scarlet Knights added on a pair of runs on an RBI single and safety squeeze to take a commanding lead, 3-0.
The Huskies were held to four hits on the afternoon and did not have multiple base runners on until the ninth. In the ninth inning, Paul Tamamaro walked with two outs and Korey Morton followed with a single to center to bring the tying run to the plate.Â
Luke Broadhurst came to the plate representing the potential tying run but grounded out to end the rally.
