STORRS, Conn. - The UConn baseball team's (9-15) ninth inning rally fell short in a 7-6 loss to Northeastern (18-6) on Wednesday afternoon at Elliot Ballpark.

Trailing 7-4 entering the bottom of the ninth, Jake Studley singled and Luke Broadhurst was hit by a pitch to bring the tying run to the plate. With two outs, Caleb Shpur smoked a two-run double down the left field line to make it a 7-6 ballgame.

After a wild pitch advanced Shpur to third base, Bryan Padilla fouled out to first base to end the rally and the game.

Northeastern jumped on UConn starter Gabe Van Emon with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning but team captain Ryan Hyde responded with a two-run double into the right field corner to even up the score at 2-2.

The Boston Huskies immediately retook the lead in the third with a run and added four runs in the fifth including a three-run home run from Jack Doyle to take a 7-2 lead.

Padilla brought the Huskies a run closer in the fifth with an RBI double and Shpur registered an RBI ground out to make it 7-4 in the seventh.

Garrett Coe was exceptional out of the UConn bullpen with 4.0 shutout innings without allowing a hit and walked just one batter.

Next up, the Huskies look to regroup this weekend and get back at it on Monday, April 1 at 3:05 p.m. against CCSU.

Game Notes

Caleb Shpur recorded a season-high three runs batted in his third multi-hit game of the season.
Ryan Hyde notched his first extra base hit and first runs batted in on his two-run double in the second. It was the team captain's first start since February 24 at California.
Jake Studley had a three-hit game on Wednesday, his first three-hit game of 2024.
Paul Tammaro had his 12-game reach base streak snapped while Korey Morton had his season-long 10-game hitting streak ended on Wednesday.
