STORRS, Conn. - Â After three delays due to lightning that spanned over two hours, the whistle blew, and the Huskies finally kicked off their match Sunday against New Hampshire. When play finally began, the Huskies offense exploded, finishing with six total goals including two from freshman Juul Sauer.
In a back-and-forth first quarter, the Huskies opened the scoring when freshman Juul Sauer was alone in front for the tip in. New Hampshire responded quickly with back-to-back goals to take the 2-1 lead early in the first period. It didn't take long for the Huskies to respond as senior Sophia Ugo scored her third goal of the season to tie the game at two. Shortly after, junior Sol Simone found the back off a redirection following the penalty corner. UConn's defense shut down the Wildcats offense the rest of the quarter and entered the break with the one goal lead.
The second quarter was a defensive battle as neither team was able to find the back of the net. Â The Huskies backline shined as they were able to prevent the Wildcats from registering a shot on goal in the second quarter and entered the half holding the one goal lead.
UConn's offense found their stride in the third quarter scoring three goals to expand their lead to four. The third quarter featured firsts for the Huskies as graduate student Lila Browne and freshman Sophie Perschk scored their first goals in a UConn uniform. Junior Sol Simone continued to make an impact, scoring her second of the day to give UConn the 6-2 lead.
The Huskies defense continued to impress in the fourth quarter, keeping Providence from finding the back of the net. With the victory, the Huskies finish their opening weekend 2-0.
Up Next: UConn will remain at home as they will welcome Cornell to Storrs Friday afternoon with the game beginning at 1pm. The game can be streamed live on UConn+.
