The UConn Huskies return home on Saturday for the start of three-straight at Pratt & Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field when they take on the UAB Blazers. The game will kick-off at 12:02 on CBS Sports Network.
This is just the second meeting between UConn and UAB as the Huskies took the first match-up last fall. UConn scored 21 points in the fourth quarter on the way to erasing a 20-3 UAB lead to come away with a 31-23 win over the Blazers on the road. The win tied the UConn program record for largest comeback, matching a 2003 win over Western Michigan where the Huskies trailed 17-0 in the second quarter only to go on and win 41-27.
The Huskies are coming off a 37-34 loss in double overtime to Rice last week. It was the Huskies third loss of the season with all three coming on the road and in overtime. UConn quarterback Joe Fagnano completed 32-of-48 passes, career-highs, for 344 yards and three touchdowns. Wide receiver Skyler Bell caught eight passes for a career-high 158 yards and a touchdown, and 80-yard score on UConn's first play of the day. Fagnano has thrown for 300-plus yards in three-straight games and has four games this year with three or more TD throws. Bell has caught a TD in five-straight games and hit the 100-yard mark for the fifth time this season.
Quarterback Joe Fagnano is closing on 10,000 career yards passing. Fagnano has completed 324-of-515 passes over his career at UConn and Maine. He is 260 yards away from hitting the 10,000 yard mark. He has tossed 84 career touchdowns with just 17 career interceptions.
A win on Saturday over the Blazers will give the Huskies bowl eligibility for the second-straight season and the third time in the four seasons under head coach Jim Mora. The last time UConn was bowl eligible in back-to-back seasons was the 2009 and 2010 seasons.
Last Meeting vs. UAB... Nov. 9, 2024 - UConn 31 UAB 23 - Birmingham, AL
The Huskies scored 21 points in the fourth quarter on the way to erasing a 20-3 UAB lead to come away with a 31-23 win over the Blazers at Protective Stadium last season. The win ties the UConn program record for largest comeback, matching a 2003 win over Western Michigan where the Huskies trailed 17-0 in the second quarter only to go on and win 41-27. UConn quarterback Joe Fagnano came in relief of starter Nick Evers, who was forced out in the third quarter with an injury. Fagnano led three scoring drives in the fourth quarter that included touchdown throws to Shamar Porter and Jasaiah Gathings. Running back Cam Edwards led the ground game with 82 yards on 11 carries including a 48-yard burst for six to push the Huskies lead to 31-23 with 2:39 left in the game. The UConn defense forced a season-high four turnovers in the win, three coming in the second half and leading to 14 points. UAB running back Lee Beebe Jr finished with 115 yards on 17 carries with a touchdown. Quarterback Jalen Kitna completed 22-of-42 for 233 yards and a score.
Scouting the Blazers... The UAB Blazers come to Connecticut off their bye week and sitting at 3-4 overall and 1-3 in the AAC. UAB is now under the direction of interim head coach Alex Mortensen who in his first game at the helm, steered the Blazers to a 31-24 upset win over their rival, the No. 22 nationally ranked Memphis Tigers. UAB has the 15th ranked passing offense in the country behind quarterback Jalen Kitna. The Blazers average 293.0 yards per game with Kitna ranked third in completions per game (26.83) and seventh in yards per game (296.0). Iverson Hooks is the team's top receiver with 41 catches for 560 yards and five touchdowns. Running back Jevon Jackson has run for 442 yards on 88 carries with three touchdowns. Solomon Beebe has 216 yards, five touchdowns and averages 7.7 yards per carry. He also has caught 23 passes for 239 yards.
UConn vs. The American... UConn is 5-4 against teams from the American Athletic Conference since becoming an independent starting in the 2021 season. UConn has three games against the AAC this season, traveling to Rice, hosting UAB and heading to Florida Atlantic for the season finale. The Huskies went 4-0 against their former league last season, beating Florida Atlantic, 48-14, Temple, 29-20, Rice, 17-10, all at home, and UAB, 31-23, on the road. UConn was 1-1 against their former conference in 2023, winning at Rice but falling at home to USF. In 2021, UConn was 0-2, falling at UCF 49-17, and falling at home to nationally ranked Houston, 45-17 when the two schools were still members of the conference. The Huskies were a member of the AAC from 2013 through 2019.
