Huskies Extinguish Blazers for Bowl Eligibilty

EAST HARTFORD, CT – The UConn Huskies posted a 38-19 victory over UAB on Saturday afternoon in front of 23,170 at Pratt & Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field to become bowl eligible thanks to their sixth win on the season.
UConn, bowl eligible for the second-straight year and third time in four seasons under head coach Jim Mora, improved to 6-3 on the year.
Wide receiver Skyler Bell recorded a standout performance with eight receptions for 149 yards and three touchdowns. Bell tied the school mark for touchdown catches in a season (11) with his three scoring grabs on Saturday.
Quarterback Joe Fagnano completed 23 of 30 passes for 267 yards and threw four touchdowns. Fagnano has eclipsed the 10,000 yards passing mark in his career between UConn and his time at Maine.
On defense, corner Cam Chadwick intercepted three passes and registered seven tackles, including one sack. His three picks ties the school record.
The Huskies never trailed on Saturday and built a 24-0 lead into halftime. After stalling on on their first drive, Fagnano took the team down the field on an 83-yard drive and connected with Bell for a 26-yard touchdown pass at 1:04, giving UConn a 7-0 lead.
UConn extended their lead in the second quarter, starting with a Cam Edwards' 1-yard touchdown run at 10:45, making it 14-0. An interception by Chadwick at the UAB 37 set up a UConn drive that concluded with a 50-yard field goal by Freeman at 8:44, his longest of the season. The Huskies continued their dominance as Fagnano connected with Bell for a nine-yard touchdown pass at 3:56, to head to the locker room up 24-0.
UConn made it 31-0 in the third quarter as Fagnano connected with Juice Vereen for a six-yard touchdown pass at 8:02. The Blazers responded quickly with a Ryder Burton 68-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Hawkins Jr. at 7:18, for their first points of the day. UConn continued to dominate offensively, as Fagnano found Bell for a 39-yard touchdown pass at 5:18, to push the score to 38–6. UAB would tack on a pair of fourth quarter scores to produce the 38-19 final.
UConn back Cam Edwards led the ground game with 15 carries for 62 yards and a score. The UConn defense created three turnovers on the day and sacked the quarterback five times. Linebacker Oumar Diomande finished with a career-high 14 tackles and a sack. Defensive lineman Antonieo Harris Jr. had a pair of sacks in the win.
The Huskies stay at home and will take on the Duke Blue Devils next Saturday, November 8 at 3:30 pm at Pratt & Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field.
Game Notes:
UConn is 2-0 all-time against UAB and is now 6-4 against teams from the American Athletic Conference since leaving the league in 2020.
The Huskies are 4-0 at home this season and are averaging 44.8 points per game on their home turf. UConn is 9-1 over the last two seasons at The Rent.
Skyler Bell hit the 100-yards receiving mark for the third-straight game and sixth time this season. It was his 10th 100-yard game at UConn. He has caught a touchdown in six-straight games and has three games this season with two or more scores.
His 11 touchdowns this season ties the school record held by Carl Bond in 1998. Bell has the most by a Husky in the FBS era. His 16 career TD grabs at UConn is now tied for fifth in the record book.
TE Juice Vereen has caught a touchdown in three-straight games and has four TDs in his last three.
QB Joe Fagnano has thrown for three or more touchdowns in three-straight games. He ran his streak to 10-straight games dating back to last season without an interception. His 42 career touchdowns at UConn is second only to Dan Orlovsky in the FBS era and fourth on the all-time list.
