No. 13 Huskies Set to Meet No. 4 Maryland in Round of 16

STORRS, Conn. - The No. 13 overall seeded UConn men's soccer team is set to face the No. 4 seeded Maryland Terrapins in the round of 16 on Saturday, November 29. Kickoff is set for 1:00pm at Ludwig Field. The match will be streamed on ESPN+. Tickets are available at umterps.evenue.net.
To get to the round of 16, UConn defeated Cornell, 3-1 in Storrs. The win marked the program's first NCAA Tournament victory since 2018 and the program's 42nd all-time tournament win. The Huskies are making their first appearance in the Sweet Sixteen since 2013.
UConn's leading goal scorer Austin Brummett led the way for the Huskies in the win over Cornell, recording his second multi-goal game this season, giving the senior ten goals in his final collegiate campaign. Brummett'sefforts helped UConn overcome a 1-0 deficit for the third time in their last four matches. Defenders Ayoub Lajhar and Alex Tupay were also key contributors in UConn's opening round win with Lajhar recording two assists and Tupay scoring the Huskies third goal, the first of his career.
A Look at Maryland
The Maryland Terrapins (12-1-4, 8-0-2 Big Ten) defeated North Carolina in penalty kicks, 4-3 to advance to the next round. Maryland is the highest remaining seed of the 16 seeds left in the tournament. The Terps finished the regular season No. 1 in the United Soccer Coaches Poll after posting a 12-0-3 record before the conference tournament. Maryland is coached by Big Ten Coach of the Year Sasho Cirovski in his 33rd season in College Park. The Terps are led by Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Year Laurin Mack and Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year Lasse Kelp. The two have led Maryland to eight clean sheets this season.
Series History
This will be the third NCAA Tournament matchup between Huskies and Terps all-time. The previous two matches ended in favor of Maryland, giving them a 2-0 record against UConn in the tournament. The last time these two programs met was back in the 2017 regular season at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium. Maryland, the then No. 1 team in the country, won the match, 3-2. The Terps have won the last four straight matches, giving them an advantage in the all-time series. UConn is 3-8 all-time against Maryland. The last time the Huskies beat the Terps was in 2002 at Morrone Stadium, 2-0. UConn is 0-5 all-time in College Park.
