Volleyball Swept By Marquette Saturday Night

MILWAUKEE, Wisc.- UConn volleyball was swept by the Marquette University Golden Eagles (22-25, 16-25, 16-23) on Saturday night at the Al McGuire Center.
Emma Werkmeister (Victor, N.Y.) got off to a quick start for the Huskies, with three early kills. Marquette opened a 10-4 advantage, with kills from Natalie Ring and Hattie Bray forcing UConn into an early timeout. McKenna Brand (Lucas, Texas) fired in an ace and Grace Maria (Arlington, Va.) chipped in a kill to close the Golden Eagle lead to one at 13-12. The two sides traded service errors, with the Huskies tying the score at 16-16. Maria and Audrey Rome (Sandwich, Ill.) gave UConn a slim one-point advantage at 18-17. Marquette regained the lead thanks to an ace from Ring, putting the home team in front 22-20. The Golden Eagles rode this momentum to a 25-22 first set victory.
Marquette capitalized on multiple UConn attack errors in the second set, taking an early 8-5 lead to trigger an early timeout from the visitors. Emma Parks tallied multiple kills to stretch the Golden Eagle lead to 14-9. Bray, Isabela Hagard, and Natalie Ring fueled an efficient Marquette attack, pushing the hosts in front 19-10. Maria fired in an ace and Loren Winn (Dallas, Texas) chipped in two kills, but Marquette held on for a 25-16 victory in the second frame.
Adriana Studer sent in three consecutive aces in the opening moments of the third set, putting Marquette in front 5-1. The Golden Eagles stayed ahead in the frame, with Ring and Elena Radeff extending the lead to 13-7. Isabella Suhy (Toledo, Ohio) notched an ace, and Hanna Tylska (Sroda Wielkopolska, Poland) contributed two kills in the third, but Ring and the Golden Eagles were too much to handle, as Marquette completed the sweep to move to 2-0 in BIG EAST play.
Ring paced Marquette with 15 kills in the win. Werkmeister led the Huskies with 12 kills in the defeat.
UConn returns home next weekend to host Seton Hall at the UConn Volleyball Center on Friday, October 3rd at 5:00 pm.
