Huskies Defeat Brown, Secure 2025 Home Opener Win

STORRS, Conn. — UConn (3-1) secured a 3-2 victory over Brown (0-3) on Sunday at Nancy Stevens Field, with a decisive two-goal second quarter setting the pace for the Huskies.
UConn and Brown were evenly matched in the first quarter, with both teams scoring a goal. Brown struck first, with Lucy Adams scoring off a penalty corner with an assist from Juliette Meijaard just 36 seconds into the game. UConn responded at 12:21 when Julia Bressler found the back of the net, marking her second goal of the season and equalizing the score at 1-1.
Emma Laritt ignited the second quarter with a goal at 21:44, assisted by Olivia McKenna, giving UConn a 2-1 lead. Shortly after, Lene Bujes capitalized on a penalty corner at 23:36, extending the advantage to 3-1 with her first goal of the season. Brown's Lucy Adams attempted to respond with two shots, but both were thwarted by UConn's goalkeeper, Natalie McKenna, keeping the score unchanged through the end of the quarter.
The third quarter began with Brown's offensive push, marked by a penalty corner at 33:26, followed by a shot from Kate Siedem that hit the post. McKenna showcased her defensive skills with a crucial save against Meijaard's shot at 34:34, maintaining the team's two-goal advantage. Sol Simone responded for the Huskies with a shot at 35:47, but it was saved by Brown's Ellie Parker, as the quarter concluded with the score still at 3-1 in favor of UConn.
The fourth quarter commenced with UConn maintaining a narrow lead. Brown managed to find the back of the net at 52:17, as Siedem scored her first goal of the season, narrowing the gap to 3-2. The Huskies' defense held strong, led by McKenna who made crucial saves at 50:56, 56:06, 58:54, and 60:00, preserving the lead despite Brown's offensive pressure.
Natalie McKenna recorded eight saves in goal, playing a crucial role in the defense, including stopping the tying goal with under a minute left following Brown pulling their goalie. Olivia McKenna contributed an assist, enhancing the team's offensive efforts. Bressler scored a goal, marking her presence in the attack. Larit netted the game-winning goal, adding to her tally for the match.
Looking ahead, the UConn field hockey team will face Rutgers on Friday, September 12, at 3 p.m. The game will take place at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex in Storrs, CT.
