HARTFORD, Conn. - The UConn men's hockey team fell to Boston College in overtime by a final of 2-1. The lone goal for the Huskies came from Kaden Shahan.
The first period was a physical battle by both teams which saw 12 total penalties called. Both teams killed off the fair share of four-on-four play. Following a Boston College penalty, the Huskies struck first as Carlin Dezainde kept the puck in the offensive zone and found Alexandre Blais who found Kaden Shahan for the Huskies first goal of the night. The Huskies continued to battle, and late in the period following an interference call on Trey Scott, the Eagles found the equalizer to head into the second period tied at one.
The second period was a physical battle, but clean as no penalties were called for the entire period. Both teams had their chances to take the lead, but strong goaltending and defensive play shined as neither team was able to find the back of the net in the period.
In the third period, the Huskies had one of their best chances of the afternoon as Kaden Shahan was on the breakaway, but his shot was saved by Boston College. The Eagles responded with chances of their own, but the Huskies defense and goaltending Tyler Muszelik shined preventing Boston College from taking the lead. One of the best chances for Boston College came on a broken play but junior defensemen Viking Gustafsson Nyberg one block with his stick then followed that block up with a block on a shot that had a wide-open net behind him, preserving the 1-1 tie. Neither team was able to find the back of the net in regulation forcing a sudden death overtime period.
The overtime period did not last long as Boston College won the opening faceoff and on their offensive possession fired a shot at Tyler Muszelik which was saved but the puck went straight to Boston College who fired the puck cross ice for the one-time game winning goal.
UP NEXT: The Huskies will turn their attention to a home and home series with Massachusetts. The Huskies will welcome Massachusetts to Storrs Friday Feb. 27.
