No. 6 UConn Takes Down Providence in Overtime

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – No. 6 UConn women's hockey defeated the Providence Friars, 2-1 in overtime on Friday night at Schneider Arena. Megan Woodworth scored the game-winning goal in overtime, pushing the Huskies to 13-5-1 in Hockey East play and 20-7-2 overall this season.
The first period started with Providence winning the initial faceoff, but it was the Huskies who struck first with junior forward Livvy Dewar scoring the game's opening goal with six minutes remaining in the first period, her seventh of the season, giving UConn a 1-0 lead.
UConn goaltender Tia Chan was active early, making 9 of her 25 saves in the opening period. The first period concluded with the Huskies in front, 1-0. Shots favored Providence in the first frame, 9-6.
The second period between UConn and Providence featured strong defensive efforts and missed opportunities on both sides. UConn dominated puck possession throughout the period. Providence was called for all three of their penalties in the second period, helping the Huskies maintain puck possession. Despite their power play opportunities, UConn was unable to convert on their chances, keeping the scoreline at 1-0. The Huskies outshot the Friars, 7-6 in the second period.
In the third period, Providence tied the game on the power play with just three minutes remaining in regulation, which would send the game to overtime.
The Huskies secured a dramatic victory with a goal by junior defender Maya Serdachny with under two minutes remaining in the five-minute overtime period, securing a 2-1 win for UConn.
UConn was outshot 26–23 by Providence but controlled the faceoff circle with a 33–22 advantage. On special teams, the Huskies went 0-for-3 on the power play, while Providence capitalized on 1-of-2 opportunities. Despite being out blocked 15–9, UConn limited the Friars to just one goal, securing a tense overtime victory. The Huskies have recorded at least nine blocked shots in 15 consecutive games.
