NORTHBOROUGH, Mass.- UConn junior defender Abby Beran has been named National Defensive Player of the Week, the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) announced in a release on Tuesday.
Beran is the first Husky to win a national weekly award since Kate Shaffer won IWLCA Co-Offensive Player of the Week on March 29th, 2022. Beran anchored the UConn defense in Saturday's win over UMass, causing six turnovers, five ground balls, and adding three draw controls. Beran sealed the victory for the Huskies with her first goal of the season (second of her collegiate career)
Earlier this week, Beran was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week for the third time this season. The junior has made national waves this season, ranking third in both ground balls per game (5.50) and caused turnovers per game (3.67).
Beran and the Huskies return to action against No. 6 Yale in New Haven on Saturday at 3:30 pm.
