STORRS, Conn. - The UConn men's hockey team took down Boston University by a final of 5-3 in front of a sold-out crowd at the Toscano Family Ice Forum. The Huskies received goals from Jake Percival, Jake Richard, Ethan Whitcomb, Anthony Allain-Samake and Joey Muldowney.
The first period began with both teams battling, feeding off the sold-out crowd and playoff environment. UConn's effort paid off as a strong back-check created a loose puck, where Tristan Fraser found Jake Percival at center ice. Percival fired a shot past Yegorov to give UConn the 1-0 lead. The Terriers had multiple chances to find the equalizer as two penalties on Jake Richard gave them the man advantage, but UConn's penalty kill stood strong, giving UConn the 1-0 lead heading into the break.
It did not take long for Boston University to find the equalizer, as they scored just one minute and 11 seconds into the start of the period. The Huskies continued to pressure the Terriers, forcing the Terriers into a penalty. With the man advantage, Joey Muldowney found Jake Richard for a go-ahead goal. Late in the period the Huskies turned the puck over on the blue line and Boston University capitalized as Jack Murtagh found the back of the net to tie the game heading into the third period.
The third period was all UConn as the Huskies scored three goals to seal the 5-3 win. UConn's first goal of the period came courtesy of Ethan Whitcomb. Whitcomb scored on his second attempt after his initial shot got blocked to give UConn the 3-2 lead. UConn's strong forecheck was on display throughout, leading to a goal from freshman Anthony Allain-Samake. The goal was initially called off for goalie interference, but UConn successfully challenged the play to overturn the call, giving Allain-Samake his first collegiate goal and the Huskies the 4-2 lead. Despite being down two goals, Boston University kept pressuring and were able to cut the lead to one with just under 10 minutes remaining. UConn's defense protected the one-goal lead down the stretch. With 55 seconds remaining Joey Muldowney sunk the empty net goal to seal the 5-3 win.
With the win, the Huskies advance to the Hockey East Semi-finals at the TD Garden in Boston.
