Huskies Split Doubleheader at St. John's

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The UConn softball team opened their BIG EAST slate with a win and a loss in the doubleheader against the St. John's Red Storm. The Huskies were victorious in game one, 5-3. UConn lost game two in a back and forth contest, 11-10.
Game One
Freshman Caprice Bohmer made her 9th start of the season in game one for the Huskies. Bohmer earned her second win of the season, going 3.0 innings, giving up three runs on four hits with three strikeouts.
Both teams threatened early as UConn and St. John's loaded the bases in their first at bats, but Bohmer and St. John's starter Anna Serafinko managed to escape the jams unscathed.
UConn opened the scoring in the top of the 3rd inning, scoring three runs on four hits. Junior outfielder Kaitlyn Breslin got the Huskies on the board with a single to center field. Three batters later, Heidi Barber drove in two more runs with a single to left field, giving the Huskies a 3-0 lead.
Sophomore infielder Cat Petteys extended UConn's lead to 4-0 in the top of the 4th inning with a solo shot to right field, her fourth home run of the season.
St. John's responded in the bottom of the 4th inning with three runs on a pair of hits, making it 4-3.
Graduate Jessica Walter came on in relief for Bohmer during the 4th inning, making her 14th appearance of the season for the Huskies. Walter was dominant in the circle, tossing 4.0 scoreless innings, giving up just one hit to the 15 batters she faced, adding three strikeouts.
In the top of the 5th inning, senior outfielder Kaitlyn Kibling gave UConn some breathing room, scoring Caylee De Meo from third base on a sacrifice fly to make it 5-3.
The game turned into a pitcher's duel in the final two innings as both teams combined for just two hits in the 6th and 7thinnings, helping secure UConn a win in their BIG EAST opener.

Game Two
Redshirt-junior Sydnee Koosh got the ball in game two, making her 4th start of the season for the Huskies. Koosh went 2.1 innings giving up four earned runs on five hits, adding a pair of strikeouts.
UConn scored the game's first run in the top of the 2nd inning on a perfectly executed bunt squeeze play from Heidi Barber, scoring Caylee De Meo from third base.
St. John's responded in the bottom of the 2nd inning with a run to knot the game at 1-1.
UConn's offense put up a six spot in the top of the 3rd inning, sending all nine hitters to the plate. Senior utility Haley Coupal got it started with a single to center field, scoring Savannah Ring. A batter later junior infielder Caylee De Meo hit her first home run of the season, a three-run shot to left field, making it 5-1. Later in the inning, Heidi Barber hit her second homer of the season, a two-run shot to left field, extending the UConn lead to 7-1.
St. John's once again responded in the bottom half of the inning, scoring five runs in the bottom of the 3rd, making it a one-run game, 7-6.
Sophomore Alexandra Bacher came on in relief for Koosh during the 3rd inning, making her 9th appearance of the season for the Huskies. Bacher went just 0.2 innings giving up a run on two hits with a strikeout.
Sophomore Amber Bretton came on in relief for Bacher in the 4th inning, making her third appearance of the season. Bretton went 2.0 innings giving up two runs with a pair of strikeouts.
Freshman utility Emma Willers recorded her first career RBI in the 5th inning, doubling to right center field, scoring De Meo from second base, pushing the Huskies lead to 8-6.
Cat Petteys extended UConn's lead in the 6th inning with her second home run of the day, a two-run shot to left field to make it 10-6.
In the bottom of the 6th inning, St. John's hit a game-tying grand slam, knotting the game at 10-10.
St. John's went on to win on a walk off single in the bottom of the 7th inning, salvaging a split of the doubleheader.
