STORRS, Conn. - Senior goalkeeper Shannon Nee (Lancaster, Pa.) produced 12 crucial saves to help guide the UConn women's lacrosse team (2-0) past James Madison (1-2) 12-10 on Sunday at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex.
UConn got off to an early 3-0 lead in the first five minutes with goals from seniors Alyson Fazio (Methuen, Mass.) and Alexandra Crofts (Westport, Conn.) and one from junior Jacqueline Jordan (Los Gatos, Calif.).
JMU went on a three-goal tear at the end of the half to go up 5-4, but senior Katherine Finkelston (Leonardtown, Md.) got her first of the game to tie it up 5-5 going into halftime.
Finkelston scored UConn's first three goals of the second half to continually give the Huskies a one-goal lead after JMU kept tying up the score. Sophomore Grace Nolan (Marcellus, N.Y.) gave UConn a two-goal lead 16:09 into the second half but JMU quickly cut it back down to one just over a minute later.
Junior Ally Tilley (Setauket, N.Y.) gave the Huskies another two-goal advantage, but the Dukes battled back again to close the gap 10-9 with less than ten minutes to play.
Jordan scored back-to-back goals, 12 seconds apart, to give UConn a 12-9 lead with just five minutes on the clock. Finkelston and Jordan both finished with four goals apiece. JMU was able to get one more on the board, but Nee made three critical saves, including a mind-blowing kick save right at the end, to leave UConn on top 12-10.
