Hervol, Hull Co-Leaders After Round 2
HAMPDEN, Mass. --- Senior Jimmy Hervol and redshirt junior Drake Hull sit atop the leaderboard and senior Nick Harrington joined them in the top five as the UConn golf team increased its lead Monday after the second round of the UConn Invitational at GreatHorse.
The Huskies, who led by four strokes after Sunday's first round after an aggregate 294, shot an aggregate 293 Monday and their 11-over 587 has given them a 12-stroke advantage over second-place Hartford (599) and a 15-stroke edge over third-place Sacred Heart (602). The field consists of 13 teams.
Hervol (Hopkinton, Mass.) and Hull (Rutland, Vt.), who were part of a four-way tie for first place after even-par 72s on Monday, had matching 73s on Tuesday and their 1-over 72-73=145s left only the two of them in a first-place tie.
Monday, it was Harrington's (Chaplin, Conn.) turn for an even-par 72 and his 4-over 76-72=148 left him in a tie for fifth in the 84-player field. Redshirt sophomore Chandler Morris (Hobe Sound, Fla.) made it three Huskies in the top 12 with his 5-over 74-75=149. Also competing for UConn, junior Tim Umphrey (Northborough, Mass.) shot 79-80=159 to tie for 64th place.
Competing as individuals, several Huskies put together outstanding efforts Monday on the tough GreatHorse course, which has not yet yielded an under-par score. Sophomore Finn Boynton (Milford, Conn.) fired a 72 and his 4-over 76-72=148, puts him in a tie for fifth place. Freshman Nick Hampoian (North Reading, Mass.) recorded a 7-over 77-74=151 to tie for 18th place, while redshirt junior Zach Iannone (Hamden, Conn.) had an 8-over 74-78=152 to tie for 28th.
Also for UConn, sophomore Rodrigo Sanchez (Santo Domingo, D.R.) was in a tie for 44th following his 11-over 78-77=155, sophomore Jack Boulger (Walpole, Mass.) was in a tie for 50th after a 12-over 78-78=156, and senior Blake Kelley was in 81st place after his 23-over 83-84=167.
