BOSTON, Mass. – In the first matchup between the two schools since last season's Hockey East Championship, the UConn women's hockey team fell in game one of this weekend's home-and-home series against No. 3 ranked Northeastern, 5-2.
Northeastern jumped out to a 1-0 lead early in the first period, but UConn responded with goals from Jaime Fox and Catherine Crawley to take a 2-1 lead into the intermission.
The home team tallied an equalizer six minutes into the second period, then added two more goals in the last two minutes of the second stanza to hold a two-goal lead.
Northeastern tacked on a goal in the final 10 seconds of the third period to secure the win and take the first game in the Battle of the Huskies, 5-2.
Junior goalie Morgan Fisher recorded 24 saves in the losing effort.
1st Period:
Northeastern struck first just under four minutes into the game. Matti Hartman received a pass from Andrea Renner in front of the net and dumped the puck into the bottom right corner to put the home Huskies up, 1-0, at 3:43.
UConn responded with an equalizer at 5:52. The Huskies went on the power play after Northeastern was whistled for tripping and the visitors took advantage of the extra man advantage, as Jaime Fox lined up a shot from the high slot that deflected into the back of the net to tie the game at one.
The road Huskies took a 2-1 lead at 8:36 in the first. Catherine Crawley sent a pass from the right point into Emily Reid, but Reid's shot was deflected out, and Crawley was there to collect the rebound and dropped the biscuit in the basket for the ninth time this season.
2nd Period:
Northeastern knotted the game at 2-2 following a power play goal at 6:36. Play on the ice remained fast paced and the score remained tied until the last two minutes, when the home team tacked on two goals to take a 4-2 lead into the third period. Matti Hartman regained the lead for the home Huskies after dumping the puck over the left shoulder of Fisher at 18:00, and then doubled its lead to two goals after capitalizing on a three-on-one break.
3rd Period:
After a tightly contested, defensive battle for much of the period, Northeastern tacked on another goal in the final 10 seconds, as Hartman scored from the high slot – her second of the afternoon – to give the home team a 5-2 win.
