BUFFALO, N.Y. – The UConn women's hockey team fell to the Mercyhurst Lakers, 3-1, Saturday afternoon in the third-place game of the Women's Ice Breaker Tournament.
Junior Morgan Wabick scored the lone UConn goal while seniors Catherine Crawley and Briana Colangelo provided the assists. Sophomore netminder Samantha Carpentier-Yelle grabbed 17 saves in just her first loss of the season.
Following a scoreless opening period both teams got their offenses going in the second. After the Lakers struck first with their goal at 1:58, UConn answered with a tally of their own in the 12'. Crawley dropped a pass off to Wabick inside the crease and the junior blasted one into the net to tie the game 1-1 at the 11:43 mark. Colangelo delivered the initial pass to Crawley and was credited with the second assist.
UConn and Mercyhurst remained deadlocked at 1-1 through the first 12 minutes of the third frame, but the home team added a pair of goals to grab a 3-1 lead late in the period and hold off the Huskies to secure the win.
