HARTFORD, Conn. – The UConn men's basketball team put on an impressive performance in Wednesday night's exhibition contest and cruised to a lopsided 103-64 victory over the St. Michael's Purple Nights at the XL Center.
Five Huskies finished the game in double figures, led by redshirt junior Alterique Gilbert who poured in 21 points while also adding five rebounds and three assists. Senior Christian Vital tallied 15 points, eight rebounds, six assists and six steals, junior Isaiah Whaley added 14 points, six rebounds and five blocks, and sophomore Brendan Adams added 14 points, four assists and four steals of his own. Junior Tyler Polley rounded out the quintet with his stat line of 13 points, five steals and two assists.
The game was close through the first 10 minutes of the opening half, but a quick burst by the Huskies gave them their first double-digit lead of the ball game. Gilbert drove into the lane, finished through contact and then sunk the free throw to complete the three-point play the old-fashioned way. He followed that up by knocking down a triple on UConn's next possession, giving the Huskies a 23-13 lead and forcing SMC to call a timeout.
SMC showed fight and gained a bit of momentum after cutting UConn's advantage to eight, 36-28, with less than a minute to go in the half. The Huskies snatched that momentum back, however, as Sidney Wilson put back the offensive rebound just before the buzzer to give UConn a 12-point lead at the break.
The Huskies opened the second half on an 18-0 run to take complete control of the game, going on to coast to a 103-64 win.
