Huskies Open Up 2019-20 Season Against Sacred Heart

STORRS, Conn. – The UConn men's basketball team officially begins its 2019-20 regular season, playing host to in-state rival Sacred Heart for the first time in four years. The game is set for a 7 p.m. tipoff at Gampel Pavilion and will be televised by SNY.

What to Know
- The Huskies are coming off a 16-17 season in 2018-19. UConn returns seven players, including four starters, from last season's squad and welcome five newcomers into the fold.
- Christian Vital is the leading returning scorer with 14.2 ppg while Alterique Gilbert and Josh Carlton return as the team leaders in assists (3.6 apg) and rebounds (6.2 rpg), respectively.
- UConn returns 62.4 percent of its scoring, 76.6 percent of its made threes, 57 percent of its rebounding, 55.5 percent of its assists, 74.5 percent of its blocked shots and 64.5 percent of its steals from last season.
- The Huskies hold a 6-0 lead in the all-time series against Sacred Heart. It is the first meeting between the Huskies and Pioneers in four years. UConn won that matchup, 82-49.
- Sacred Heart, out of Fairfield and the Northeast Conference, opened its season on Tuesday at Providence, bowing to the Friars, 106-60. Forward E.J. Anosike led the Pioneers with 20 points and 7 rebounds.
Leading the Pack
Dan Hurley begins his second season as head coach of the UConn men's basketball team. Hurley became the 19th head coach in the history of UConn men's basketball on March 22, 2018. Prior to his hiring, he spent two seasons at Wagner College and six at the University of Rhode Island, and owns a collegiate coaching record of 167- 122 (.578). Hurley made two consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances (2016-17, 2017-18) and was named the 2017-18 Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year.

UConn will play its second of three straight games at Gampel Pavilion to open the season as it entertains Saint Joseph's as part of the Charleston Classic on Wednesday, Nov. 13. The tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. with TV coverage by the CBS Sports Network.
