STORRS, Conn. – Alterique Gilbert and Josh Carlton each racked up double-doubles to help lead the UConn men's basketball team to an 18-point victory over the Iona Gaels Wednesday night at Gampel Pavilion. The Huskies move to 6-2 on the year, while Iona falls to 2-3 overall.
Carlton led the way with 19 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks while Gilbert racked up 12 points, 10 assists and five rebounds. Christian Vital added 16 points to go along with nine boards, and Tyler Polley rounded out the double-figures scorers with 14 points of his own.
The Huskies jumped out to an 11-4 lead, with seven of those points coming from Vital. Alterique Gilbert swished home a three and Isaiah Whaley knocked down a pair of jumpers to open up an 11-point lead and force the Gaels to call timeout.
Iona responded out of the timeout, scoring 12 unanswered to grab a 23-22 advantage. The two teams battled the remainder of the half, with the Huskies holding a slim 36-35 lead at the break.
UConn gained separation from Iona with an 18-2 run to start the second half and opened up a 22-point lead – it's largest of the game – at the 11:56 mark after Gilbert found Sidney Wilson for the alley-oop.
Iona would claw their way back to pull within 10, as Isaiah Ross' fastbreak layup made it 64-54.
UConn wouldn't allow the Gaels to get any closer – The Huskies tightened up the defense and held Iona to just eight points over the final six minutes to lock up their sixth win of the year.
