MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The UConn baseball team looks to bounce back from a tough weekend in Charleston with another trip to the Palmetto State. The Huskies are set to play in the five-team CCU Baseball Tournament beginning Friday, March 1 to Sunday, March 3. All four games will be on WHUS/fm.whus.org.
History vs. Northeastern... UConn is 56-19-1 all-time against the Northeastern Huskies. Last season, No. 18 UConn came back to win 6-5 on the road in a contest between two teams that earned at-large bids to the NCAA Tournament.
The Huskies mounted a two-out rally in the eighth inning, down 2-1, by scoring five runs including a go-ahead, two-run triple for Chris Winkel.
History vs. Indiana... UConn is 4-1 vs. the Hoosiers in a series that dates back to 1998. The last meeting between the two programs came in 2013 in an epic, 4-3, 15-inning victory for the Huskies in St. Petersburg, Fla. Bryan Daniello scored on a wild pitch to lift the Huskies in a four-hour and 58-minute marathon. Carson Cross made the start for the Huskies and pitched six solid frames.
History vs. Coastal Carolina... UConn is 3-2 against the Chanticleers including two nail-biting victories a season ago. The Huskies eliminated Coastal in the 2018 Conway Regional on the strength of Christian Fedko's eighth inning blast that lifted UConn to a 6-5 win.The Huskies also defeated Coastal on March 13, 12-10 in a game UConn scored seven runs in the first inning and had to hold on in the ninth behind CJ Dandeneau's first career save.
History vs. Illinois... The Huskies are 1-1 against the Iliini with the first meeting coming in 2012 at Oregon State. UConn lost that meeting but picked up its first win against Illinois in 2014 at TicketReturn.Com Field in Myrtle Beach, 6-0.
Brian Ward fired 5.2 scoreless innings while Bryan Daniello, Blake Davey and Eric Yavarone all recorded multi-hit efforts.
History vs. Big Ten... UConn is 21-17 against current Big Ten teams since 2010. The Huskies most recent matchup against a Big Ten team cam in 2015 when the Huskies defeated Michigan State 3-1 in Greenville, S.C. When the Huskies were in the Big East Conference, the team participated in the Big East/Big Ten Challenge at the start of the season.
San Jose Spark... Senior Thad Phillips has been a spark off the bench for the Huskies through the first two weekends. The San Jose, Calif. native has only made two starts this season but both have made an impact. In his first start against No.4 Louisville, Phillips contributed a key RBI single to pad the UConn lead and also threw out a runner from behind the plate. This past Sunday at Charleston, Phillips recorded his first multi-hit game of the season, reached three times and scored a pair of runs.
Woody Goes, We Go... Senior centerfield Mike Woodworth is off to a hot start in 2019. The UConn leadoff hitter leads the team with six runs scored, three stolen bases and three sacrifice bunts. Last series, Woody went 7-13 (.538) with a double, four runs scored, three RBIs and stole a pair of bases.
Return of the All-American... Mason Feole has missed the first two weekends of the season rehabbing back from a triceps injury he suffered in January. The UConn Ace garnered preseason All-American recognition by Collegiate Baseball (First Team), NCBWA (Second Team) and D1Baseball.com (Third Team). The Preseason Conference Pitcher of the Year racked up 120 strikeouts and recorded a 2.50 ERA en route to notching nine victories for the Huskies in 2018.
