CONWAY, S.C. – The UConn baseball team opened the CCU Baseball Tournament with a solid 7-4 victory against Northeastern at Springs Brooks Stadium on Friday morning.
UConn (4-3) came out swinging the bats by scoring in four of the first five innings. Freshman Pat Winkel made his return to the starting lineup by providing a pair of sacrifice flies to notch his first career multi-RBI game.
His older brother, Chris, cashed in an RBI single in the first after his brother's sac fly to push the UConn lead to 2-0. The junior captain captured his third multi-hit game after doubling to open the fourth inning.
Anthony Prato led UConn with his second three-hit game of the season and scored three runs. Prato grabbed his team-leading fifth double to begin the third and eventually scored on a Pat Winkel sac fly.
Jeff Kersten was solid for the Huskies and recorded his second win of the season. The Pinole, Calif. native fired 6.2 innings, allowed three runs and struck out four. Kersten's only major hiccup was in the third inning when the senior walked three-straight batters with two outs that eventually led to a game-tying two-run single in the frame.
UConn regained the lead back for good in the fourth on an RBI single from Conor Moriarty. The Huskies created distance in the fifth inning with an RBI double off the bat of John Toppa and Christian Fedko's blooper resulted in an RBI single to make it 6-3 UConn.
Fedko added an RBI single in the ninth inning to extend the UConn lead to 7-3. It was the second multi-RBI game of the season for the sophomore.
CJ Dandeneau notched his third career save, all of them coming at Springs Brooks Stadium, with a 2.1 inning performance. The redshirt senior allowed just one hit, one unearned run and struck out a pair without walking a batter.
UConn returns to action on Saturday with a doubleheader against Indiana (10:30 a.m.) and Coastal Carolina (2 p.m.)

- Cole Brodnansky made his first career start at designated hitter and reached three times on Friday.
- John Toppa and Anthony Prato both have hit safely in the first seven games of the season.
- UConn recorded a season-high 12 hits in the victory.
