CONWAY, S.C. – The UConn baseball team dropped both games on a doubleheader on Saturday to Indiana, 9-6, and No. 19 Coastal Carolina, 10-7, at Springs Brooks Stadium.
It was a tough day for the Huskies with the pitching staff issuing 20 walks, four hit by pitches, six wild pitches en route to giving up 19 total runs in the twin bill.
Game 1 vs. Indiana
The Huskies jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first three innings. Mike Woodworth hit his first home run of the season and starting pitcher Joe Simeone faced the minimum after three scoreless frames.
In the fourth, Indiana started to gain momentum by scoring a pair of runs in the fourth, three runs in the fifth and got a grand slam off the bat of Matt Gorski to break it open, 9-3, in the sixth inning.
UConn continued to battle back with a sacrifice fly from Paul Gozzo in the sixth and then a two-run single for Chris Winkel in the ninth to cut the deficit to 9-6. The Huskies brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth inning but a groundout from Gozzo ended the ballgame.
Redshirt freshman Karl Johnson was the bright spot on the mound with two scoreless frames, one hit allowed and a pair of strikeouts in his first career appearance with UConn.
Game 2 vs. Coastal
UConn and Coastal Carolina have had some tight games in recent meeting between the two programs. Saturday night was much of the same with the two teams trading leads in the early innings.
Coastal scored a pair of runs in the first inning against Kenny Haus, who made his first career start on the hill.
Senior catcher Thad Phillips responded with a two-run homer in the second, his first of the season, to tie the game at two apiece.
The Huskies took their first lead of the game in the third on a two-run long ball from John Toppa. The second home run of the year for Toppa pushed UConn ahead 4-3. However, the UConn pitchers could not keep the Chanticleers off the scoreboard as Coastal posted runs in each of the first six innings to take a 10-7 lead.
John Toppa (three), Mike Woodworth and Chris Winkel all provided multi-hit efforts in the contest.
Next up, the Huskies look to regroup against No. 25 Illinois at TicketReturn.com Field at noon. Mason Feole makes his first start of the season for the Huskies.
