CHESNUT HILL, Mass. – The UConn women's ice hockey team couldn't generate enough opportunities to overcome No. 6 Boston College's knack for finding the back of the net, as it dropped a 41 decision to the Eagles in Game 1 of the Hockey East quarterfinals on Friday afternoon.
Junior goaltender Morgan Fisher made 29 saves for the Huskies (14-17-4), but was under constant fire throughout the game - as the second-seeded Eagles took the lead in the second period and maintained it in the third.
After a scoreless, high intensity first period that featured 20 combined saves, the home team was able to break through thanks to a power play goal two minutes into the period. BC extended their lead to 2-nil at 2:48 after netting a goal during 4-on-4 play.
Morgan Wabick sliced the deficit in half after tallying a power play goal – her sixth of the season - to put the Huskies on the board at 3:39 in the third period. UConn turned up the pressure as it searched for the equalizer, but back-to-back Boston College goals at the 11-minute mark ended all hopes of sending the game into extra sessions.
1st Period
Boston College was all over Morgan Fisher in the first period, but the junior netminder proved she was up to the task as she snatched up all 13 shots she faced. Maddy McArthur was equally up to the task, turning away all seven shots she saw from the Huskies.
2nd Period
Boston College put two on the board early in the period. On the power play, Makenna Newkirk and Cayla Barnes set up Delaney Belinskas for a goal at 2:08 to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. The home team doubled its lead 40 seconds later after Kali Flanagan scored during 4-on-for action.
3rd Period
UConn finally broke through in the third period. Taylor Wabick found Morgan on the right side of the ice, and the sophomore ripped a shot from just inside the faceoff circle to cut the deficit in half at 3:39.
BC would seal the game late with two goals in 30 seconds. First, Megan Keller converted on a man-up opportunity at 11:19, before Makenna Newkirk tallied an even strength goal at 11:42 to make it 4-1.
