ORLANDO, Fla. – The UConn baseball team gutted out a 3-1 win in 11 innings to even its series against UCF and force a rubber game on Sunday at 1 p.m. The Huskies moved to 16-9 overall and 3-2 in The American.
The Huskies received a stellar performance from their pitching staff on Saturday night with five pitchers allowing one unearned run in 11 innings of work. Jake Wallace earned his second win of the year with three scoreless innings that featured just one hit, no walks and six strikeouts to close out the win. Both of the closer's wins have come in extra-innings this season.
With the game tied at 1-1 in the seventh, the game hung in the balance, the Knights had runners at second and third with no outs. Out of the bullpen steps out redshirt freshman Caleb Wurster with the game on the line. The left-hander promptly struck out back-to-back batters before getting a ground out to short to end the threat. Wurster finished the day with two scoreless innings that included three punch-outs.
The Huskies rallied in the 11th with back-to-back singles from Mike Woodworth and Anthony Prato. After a John Toppa sacrifice bunt and intentional walk to Christian Fedko, the bases were loaded for Chris Winkel. A wild pitch, though, gave the Huskies the lead as Woodworth came in to score. Winkel followed with a shallow fly ball to right that Prato was able to tag and score to make it 3-1.
Jeff Kersten made the start for the Huskies and pitched five solid innings, allowing one unearned run on four hits and struck out one.
