STORRS, Conn. - The UConn baseball team rallied behind its stellar pitching on Wednesday to a 2-1 victory against Rhode Island at J.O. Christian Field.
Six pitchers allowed just one run against the Rams including eight shutout frames to finish the ballgame. Caleb Wurster was spectacular with three scoreless innings to bridge the gap to UConn closer Jake Wallace.
With the Huskies leading 2-1, Wurster came out of the pen with bases loaded and no outs in the sixth. The left-hander immediately induced a 1-2-3 double play and a fly out to get out of the mess and preserve the lead.
The Coventry, R.I. native allowed one hit in a career-high three innings and struck out a pair.Â
Wallace recorded his ninth save with a 1-2-3 ninth inning to lower his era to 0.39. Earlier in the day, Wallace was named to the Midseason Stopper of the Year Watch List, an award given to the top reliever in college baseball.
The Huskies did just enough offensively, with a run in the first on an Anthony Prato RBI single and a Mike Woodworth sacrifice fly in the third.Â
John Toppa and Kyler Fedko both collected multi-hit efforts in the win.
The Huskies travel to Sam Houston State for a three-game series against the Bearkats beginning on Friday, April 26 at 7:30 p.m. ET
