STORRS, Conn. - The final day at J.O. Christian Field was a day for celebration, to look back on a place that's been around since 1968 and relish the memories and moments created here.
It was also a day the Huskies (30-11, 10-11 AAC)Â honored its seven seniors prior to the first game of a doubleheader but there was a diminished celebration as the Huskies offense laid a major egg in both games of the doubleheader. UConn lost 3-2 in game one and followed it up with a 3-1 loss to drop the series to the Bulls.
The Huskies NCAA Tournament chances took a major hit as UConn drops to 10-11 in the American Conference and will need to recover quickly with a tough road series at Tulane beginning on Thursday, May 16.Â
UConn held 1-0 leads entering the seventh inning in both contests. But UConn was unable to hold on against the last place Bulls (25-25, 7-14). The Huskies combined for 12 hits in the doubleheader and only one of the three runs scored came via a hit (Pat Winkel home run).
The Huskies received solid pitching all weekend, allowing just eight runs combined and only three of the eight were earned.. Jeff Kersten followed up Mason Feole's solid start on Friday with a 6.1 inning performance that featured just one run allowed on five hits and included five strikeouts.
A group of underclassmen threw the ball well in the series finale with Jimmy Wang, Joe Simeone and Karl Johnson all recording two scoreless frames. Angus Mayock was one pitch away from getting out of a jam in the seventh but an error, followed by back-to-back singles eventually led to a three-spot in the seventh.
The Huskies say good bye to J.O. Christian Field with 541-287-8 record and finish the 2019 season with a 9-4 mark in Storrs. The Huskies will look to regroup on Tuesday, May 14 at 3:30 p.m. at Rhode Island.
