KINGSTON, R.I. – On a cold, rainy afternoon from Bill Beck Field, the UConn baseball team held off Rhode Island, 5-4, to move to 31-21 on the season and finish 9-1 in Northeast midweek games in 2019.
The victory was the 556th of head coach Jim Penders career, tying him with Andy Baylock for most all-time at UConn.
The Huskies jumped out to a 3-0 lead on the strength of four hits in the top of the first. Pat Winkel opened the scoring with an RBI double that just stayed fair down the left field line and out of reach of the Rams left fielder's diving attempt.
The Fedko brothers, Christian and Kyler, added RBI singles to extend the lead to three.
On pitch count, Jimmy Wang logged 2.1 scoreless inning of work with one hit allowed and collected three strikeouts to earn his second win of the season. Jake Wallace converted his 13th save of the season with 1.1 scoreless frames for the Huskies.
Chris Winkel added to the UConn lead in the fourth with an RBI single into right field to make it 4-0. Both Winkel brothers led the way with two-hit days at the plate.
John Toppa converted a key two-out RBI single in the sixth that ended up being the deciding run in the ballgame.
Up next, UConn heads into a critical American Conference series this weekend in New Orleans against Tulane. The series gets going on Thursday night with Mason Feole on the bump for the Huskies.
