NEW ORLEANS – The UConn baseball team gutted out an 8-5 victory against Tulane on Thursday night at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium. The win was the 557th of head coach Jim Penders career, moving him ahead of Andy Baylock for most in UConn history.
The Huskies (32-21, 11-11 American) showed resiliency by coming back from a 4-1 deficit heading into the fifth inning behind a four-hit, seven RBI game from freshmen catcher Pat Winkel. The left-handed swinger roped a two-out, three-run single into right centerfield to tie the game in the fifth. Mike Woodworth scored all the way from first with heads up base running while the Tulane centerfielder took his time getting the ball back in.
Winkel gave the Huskies the lead back in the seventh by hitting a grand slam home run into the parking lot in right field to make it 8-4 UConn. Winkel fell a triple shy of the cycle while recording his first four-hit game of his young career.
Mason Feole earned his 19th career victory with six solid innings of work for the Huskies. The junior buckled down after the Huskies tied the game up in the fifth by stranding a pair of base runners in both the fifth and six innings.

The lefthander racked up six strikeouts and moved into second all-time on the UConn strikeout list by passing Anthony Kay (263). With his 267 strikeouts, Feole is three away from tying Tim Cate for the most in UConn history.
Paul Gozzo recorded a multi-hit effort in his return to Tulane. The junior played for the Green Wave for one season in 2017 before transferring to UConn. Gozzo gave the Huskies an early advantage by roping an RBI double to left field in the second.
The Huskies will try to grab a series win tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. ET with Jeff Kersten on the bump for the Huskies.
