NEW ORLEANS – The UConn baseball team clinched a road series win at Tulane (30-24, 11-11 American), 10-6, on Friday evening at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
The Huskies (33-21, 12-11 American) tied their season-high with 10 runs scored in a conference game. With the score even at 4-4 entering the sixth inning, the Huskies responded with a pair of crooked number innings in the sixth and ninth innings to pull away from the Green Wave.
Anthony Prato (3-6, 2 RBI) gave UConn the lead for good in the sixth with a RBI single into left field to score pinch-hitter David Langer (3-3. 2 R) from second. Pat Winkel followed with a two-run double to extend the UConn lead to 7-4. Winkel went 3-5 with three RBIs on Friday, moving his series total to 7-10 with two doubles, a grand slam and 10 runs batted in.
UConn gained three two-out insurance runs to balloon its lead to six, 10-4. Michael Chiovitti smacked an RBI single to left and later in the inning scored from second on an RBI infield single from John Toppa, on a grounder up the middle. Prato added another RBI single to cap the scoring.
The Huskies head into the series finale with an opportunity to finish as high as second place in the conference standings with a victory on Saturday. UConn can only reach a No. 3 seed in the conference tournament because Cincinnati (13-11 American) owns the tiebreaker over the Huskies. Saturday's series finale begins at 2 p.m. ET and can be hear on 91.7 FM WHUS or online at whus.org.
