Dunlop Leads Huskies to American Conference Championship Game

CLEARWATER, Fla. – The UConn baseball team advanced to its second-straight American Athletic Conference championship game with a 8-3 victory against Wichita State on Saturday afternoon at Spectrum Field.
A five-run second inning paired with a stellar outing out of the bullpen for sophomore Colby Dunlop vaulted the Huskies on Saturday. The right-hander came out of the pen and tossed 5.1 scoreless innings to record his team-leading sixth win of the year.
Dunlop allowed just two hits and did not walk a batter while striking out three. He ended his day by retiring the final 10 batters he faced.
The UConn offense supplied all the runs that they would need in a five-run, 10-batter inning in the second. The Huskies entered the frame trailing 2-0 but Michael Chiovitti collected a game-tying, two-run double down the right field line.
The Huskies took its first lead of the day on a balk by Wichita State reliever, Miller Pleimann, that scored Chris Winkel from third.
Anthony Prato drove in a pair for the Huskies including an RBI single in the second inning.
The Huskies await their championship game opponent, with it being either second-seeded Cincinnati or sixth-seeded UCF at noon on Sunday on ESPNews.
Notes
- Michael Woodworth collected his first multi-hit game since April 30th vs. CCSU. It is his team-leading 20th multi-hit game of the season.
- Chris Winkel walked three times for the first time in his career on Saturday. It is the third career multi-walk game for Winkel.
- The Huskies walked 11 times, the most they've walked in a conference game this season.
- Colby Dunlop tied a season-high with 5.1 innings of work (Virginia, 3/20). It is longest outing of Dunlop's career out of the bullpen.
- The Huskies advance to the championship game of a conference tournament for the seventh time under head coach Jim Penders.
- Paul Gozzo extended his hitting streak to eight games.
