MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The UConn men's basketball team suffered a 70-63 setback against the Memphis Tigers Saturday afternoon at the FedEx Forum. The Huskies fall to 11-10 overall and 2-6 in AAC play while Memphis sees its mark improve to 16-5 overall and 5-3 in conference action.
Christian Vital led the Huskies with a game-high 20 points while James Bouknight poured in 17 points of his own. Alterique Gilbert was the third UConn player to finish the game in double figures after chipping in ten.
The first half was a game of runs. After UConn jumped out to a 7-4 lead at the first media timeout, Memphis responded with an 11-0 run to take a 15-7 advantage. That lead wouldn't last long, as the Huskies countered with an 11-0 spurt of their own to regain a three-point lead. UConn led by four late in the half, but Lance Thomas' triple at 1:25 brought the Tigers within a point at the break, 31-30.
Memphis led 46-43 following a 7-0 run early in the half, but the Huskies snatched it right back behind following buckets from Whaley and Gilbert. After trading blows for the better part of seven minutes, Lester Quinnones knocked down a corner three to put the Tigers up for good, and the home team would make enough free throws down the stretch
