CHESTNUT, Mass. – The UConn women's hockey team made a late third period rally but ultimately came up short, falling to the Boston College Eagles 4-2 Friday night in the first game of the Hockey East quarterfinals.
Natalie Snodgrass and Jessie Aney notched the UConn goals while goaltender Morgan Fisher accumulated 23 saves in net. The Huskies held a 44-27 advantage in shots on-goal and had two power play opportunities but came up empty on both.
The teams will return to the ice tomorrow afternoon for game two. Puck drop is scheduled for 2 pm.
Boston College jumped out in front early and put two goals on the board to take a 2-0 lead into the first intermission. The Eagles struck for the game's first goal at the 2:40 mark off the stick of Hannah Bilka, then doubled their lead following Cayla Barnes' goal in the last minute period. The home team extended their lead to three just 51 seconds into the second period.
UConn continued to pepper Boston College netminder Maddy MacArthur with shots as they looked to cut into the deficit, finally breaking through in the 18th minute of the third. After electing to go with an extra attacker, Aney put the Huskies on the board at the 17:13 mark on her third goal of the season. Tristyn Svetek fired a shot towards the net and Aney was able to get her stick on the puck and tip it into the back of the net.
Shortly after, Snodgrass cut UConn's deficit to one with just 1:25 remaining in the third. After the initial shot was blocked and popped back into the slot, the puck made its way out to Taylor Wabick before dishing it off to her sister Morgan. Morgan Wabick made a nice feed to the cutting Snodgrass and the junior fired a shot off the crossbar and in the pull the Huskies within a goal, 3-2 at 18:35.
The Eagles tallied an empty net goal with 45 seconds remaining allowing them to hold on for the win.
