MILWAUKEE, Wisc. - Taking the road for the first time in BIG EAST action, the UConn women's volleyball team fell to Marquette, 3-1, Friday evening at the Al McGuire Center.
UConn (10-5, 2-1 BIG EAST) was paced by senior Kennadie Jake-Turner, who notched a team-best 10 kills on a .444 hitting percentage, and added in three blocks.
Junior Allie Garland struck from the outside and fellow junior Karly Berkland followed with an ace to give the Huskies an early edge, 10-9. Marquette (11-2, 3-0 BIG EAST) swung the scoreboard until graduate student McKayla Wuench added two more aces as part of a 4-0 UConn run to cut the deficit to 19-17, but the Golden Eagles stayed ahead by two to take the set.
Three straight errors from Marquette in the second frame thrust the Huskies out to a 5-2 advantage. UConn kept its foot on the pedal as senior Caylee Parker and sophomore Taylor Pannell bookended a 14-5 streak to put the set out of reach. Furthermore, the Huskies hit .522 and committed just two attacking errors over 36 attempts to tie the match.
The third set started with back-and-forth rallies before Wuench and Pannell accounted for a 3-0 spurt to give UConn its first lead, 10-9. However, the Golden Eagles utilized a 7-0 run as it pulled away with another set point.
Marquette remained hot with a .500 hitting percentage in the fourth set as UConn couldn't find its rhythm, falling for the first time in conference play this season.
The Huskies will remain on the road as they visit DePaul tomorrow for a 6 p.m. EST start.
