Huskies fall to Merrimack; Suffer First Loss

STORRS, Conn. – The University of Connecticut women's hockey team fell to Merrimack Friday night, 3-0, for the Huskies' first loss of the season.
A physical and defensive battle early in the first as UConn pressured the Merrimack goalie who made eight saves. UConn's defense stayed strong as Samantha Carpentier-Yelle made four saves to keep the game scoreless. Both teams stayed strong on defense as they would go into the break scoreless.
The second period started the same way as the first with both teams limiting the scoring chances. The Huskies continued to pepper the goaltender with shots forcing the Merrimack goaltender to make a total of 24 saves. Merrimack would score on the power play late in the second period to break the tie and give them the 1-0 lead heading into the third period.
Merrimack would add another goal early in the second period to take a 2-0 lead. UConn would continue to put pressure on the Merrimack goaltender but could not find the back of the net. With 4 minutes left in the third period, Merrimack scored to give them the 3-0 lead. That lead would hold as the Huskies would lose and suffer their first loss of the season.
