Huskies Fall to Hofstra in Season Opener

HEMPSTEAD, NY – The UConn women's lacrosse team fell to Hofstra 17-11 in the 2021 season opener on Saturday afternoon. Senior Sydney Watson and junior Lia LaPrise led the Huskies with 3 goals apeice. The Huskies begin the campaign 0-1, while Hofstra improves to 2-0 on the season.
Hofstra jumped out to an early 4-0 lead before senior Stephanie Palmucci scored the first goal of the Huskies' season with Watson adding her first of the year shortly after to cut the Pride lead in half. Hofstra scored a few quick goals to open up an 8-3 lead. The Huskies battled back, outscoring Hofstra 4-1 to end the half trailing 9-7. Watson recorded a first half hat trick, while Palmucci tallied a goal and two assists before the break.
The Pride got off to fast start in the second half, continuing to pressure the UConn net. Hofstra built on their first half scoring success, pushing the lead to 14-8 midway through the second half. UConn battled hard, but would not be able to come back, ultimately falling 17-11. Hofstra's Alyssa Parrella led all scorers with seven goals and one assist.
Seven Huskies found the back of the net Saturday, including junior Jordan Coulon and seniors Sam McKenna and Olivia Troy, who added a goal each. Sophomore Kate Shaffer added a goal and an assist for her first points of the season.
UConn returns to action February 26, when they travel to UMass Lowell. Opening draw time is TBA.
