WASHINGTON, D.C. – The UConn starting backcourt of James Bouknight and R.J. Cole combined for 37 points, 15 rebounds and eight assists to lead the University of Connecticut men's basketball team over Georgetown, 70-57, on Tuesday evening in our nation's capital.
With the win, the Huskies improve to 11-6 overall and 8-6 in BIG EAST play. The Hoyas slip to 7-11, 5-8.
"This was a good win, those guys were playing really well, Patrick (Ewing) is just doing a great job," head coach Dan Hurley said. "To come on the road and struggle through parts of the game and win comfortably felt good."
Bouknight recorded his second-straight double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Cole added 17 points, five rebounds and a season-high tying seven assists.
Tyrese Martin and Adama Sanogo each chipped in with eight points for the Huskies.
UConn trailed at the half, 26-25, and the first nine-minutes of the second half were a back-and-forth battle, marked by five ties and eight lead changes.
However, Connecticut seized control of the game with a 17-4 run and took a 61-48 lead with 3:22 remaining in regulation. Cole keyed the run with six points and exceptional ball security at the point.
UConn held Georgetown to just 36 percent shooting on the evening and outscored the Hoyas 50-24 in the paint. The Huskies also held a commanding 46-30 advantage on the glass.
"That was a major point of emphasis coming in," Hurley said. "I thought that we, minus a stretch where we didn't guard the ball, had a few breakdowns defensively, the rebound was on point. The guys really attacked the glass."
The Huskies shot 45 percent from the field, including 56 percent in the second half.
The Huskies stormed out of the gate and built a 10-0 lead after an Adama Sanogo dunk just 2:46 into the contest. UConn made only one field goal over the final 7:35 of the first half though, allowing the Hoyas to chip away at the Connecticut lead to take a 26-25 advantage at the break.
UConn is back in action on Saturday, February 27 when the team squares off against Marquette. Game time is set for 2:30 at Gampel Pavilion and the contest will be televised nationally on FOX.
