STORRS, Conn. – Coming off a 10-day break from game action, the UConn men's basketball team gets back on the court Saturday, facing Seton Hall in a BIG EAST contest at Gampel Pavilion. Tipoff time is 12 noon, televised on the FOX Network.
The Huskies (8-3 overall, 5-3 BIG EAST) and Seton Hall (10-8, 7-5) are both charter members of the original BIG EAST, but they have not met since the breakup of the league in 2013. In 60 games against each other in BIG EAST competition, UConn held a 44-16 edge.
With UConn's leading scorer, sophomore James Bouknight (20.3 ppg), missing the last five games while recovering from elbow surgery, the Huskies have been led in scoring (11.9) and rebounding (7.2) by junior Tyrese Martin, along with junior R.J. Cole (11.9 ppg, 4.1 apg), and senior Isaiah Whaley (8.9 ppg, 6.5 rpg, 2.8 bpg).
The Huskies, who lead the league in scoring defense (62.9), are trying to build on their 63-51 victory over Butler in their last game, which broke a two-game losing streak.
Seton Hall broke a three-game losing streak of its own with a 60-43 triumph at Providence on Wednesday. The Pirates have a formidable front line, including 6-11 Sandro Mamukelashvili (17.7 ppg, 7.1 rpg), 7-2 Ike Obiagu (2.7 blocks) and 6-6 Jared Rhoden (14.7ppg, 6.7 rpg). They have played well on the road, sporting a 5-4 overall road record, 4-2 in BIG EAST road games.
UConn coach Dan Hurley is a Seton Hall grad (1996). He has never faced his alma mater as the head coach at UConn, but his Rhode Island teams were 1-1 against the Pirates.
Following the game against Seton Hall, UConn is scheduled to hit the road for two games next week – at Providence on Wednesday, Feb. 10, and at Xavier on Saturday, Feb. 13. Â
