PHILADELPHIA - The UConn baseball team (5-10) ended a five-game losing streak with a 6-4 victory to open its three-game series at St. Joseph's on Friday afternoon at Smithson Field.

Starting pitcher Ben Casparius earned his second win of the season with 6.2 innings and 11 strikeouts on the mound.

UConn got their starting pitcher some support with a bases-clearing double off the bat of second baseman Christian Fedko in the fourth inning.

Kyler Fedko, Kevin Ferrer and Ciaran Devenney each added RBIs.

In the sixth inning with the Huskies leading 5-4, Casparius stranded the tying run at third base with back-to-back strikeouts.

The Hawks threatened again in the seventh with the bases loaded and two outs but Kenny Haus came out of the pen and registered a strikeout to keep the Huskies ahead, 6-4.

Haus tossed a scoreless eighth inning and then got the first out of the ninth. UConn closer came on with a runner on second and one out and was able to notch the final two outs to earn his first save of the year.

UConn will try to earn a series win tomorrow at 2 p.m. with Joe Simeone on the mound for the Huskies.

Ben Casparius notched his second double-digit strikeout game of 2021 with 11.
