CONWAY, S.C. – Trailing 12-4 entering the seventh against Coastal Carolina on Monday afternoon at Springs Brooks Stadium, the UConn baseball team (4-6) mounted a comeback that saw the Huskies bring the tying run to the plate in the ninth inning. The Huskies ultimately fell 12-10 to wrap up their extended weekend in the palmetto state.
2 YR FR Reggie Crawford swatted a two-run homer in the seventh and followed it up with a bases-clearing double in the eighth to make it a 12-10 deficit in the eighth. The left-handed swinging first baseman leads the team with 5 homers and 17 RBIs after Monday's contest.
Zach Bushling recorded the second multi-homer performance of the weekend for the Huskies with a pair of solo shots. The Lake Isabella, Calif. native extended his hitting streak to a team-high eight games with his first two career long balls in a UConn uniform.
Coastal Carolina scored in each of the first five innings to capture their eight-run advantage. Over the last three innings, Sam Favieri, Kenny Campbell and Kenny Haus posted scoreless frames.
For Campbell, it was his first time against D1 competition since April 7, 2018 when he was pitching for Lafayette. Two injuries (Hernia, UCL) forced the right-hander to miss 1,066 days before taking the hill against the Chanticleers. The 5 YR JR struck out a pair in 1.1 innings of shutout ball.
With the Huskies trailing by a pair of runs in the ninth, Ciaran Devenney led off the frame with a walk, bringing the tying run to the plate. However, unlike Sunday night, the Huskies were unable to tie the game.
UConn closes the weekend at the Baseball at the Beach tournament with a 2-2 record that featured wins against Miami (OH) and Coastal.
Next up, the Huskies head to Big 12 country to take on nationally ranked Texas Tech from Lubbock, Texas.
