BSB Wraps Up Non-Conference Weekends vs. UMass

STORRS, Conn. - The UConn baseball team (10-12) are set to play its last non-conference weekend series of the season with a three-game set UMass on Friday and Saturday at Elliot Ballpark. The series opener begins at 3 p.m. on Friday and Saturday's doubleheader against the Minutemen will start at 12 p.m. All three games will be video streamed on Huskies All-Access while 91.7 FM WHUS will have audio for Friday's contest and MIXLR will have audio coverage for the twin bill on Saturday.
The Huskies and Minutemen have played against each other since the 1900 season with UConn leading the overall series 97-73-3.
UMass is 7-9 on the season and were swept at Northeastern last weekend before losing to Holy Cross during midweek action. Dylan Judd leads the team with three long balls and 13 RBIs while Mike Gervasi is leading the Minutemen with a .315 AVG.
UMass sends Jack Steele (Friday), Zack Given (Saturday) and Daniel Livnat (Saturday) to the mound while the Huskies will go Ben Casparius (Friday), Austin Peterson (Saturday) and Joe Simeone (Saturday).
Pitching Heating Up.. The UConn pitching staff has been throwing the ball well over the course of the last eight games. The staff has compiled a 2.76 team ERA with an opponent's batting average at .190. The Huskies have struck out 85 batters in the 75.0 innings and walked 26. Over the stretch, Kenny Haus (6.2 IP), Andrew Marrero (4.0 IP), Justin Willis (3.2 IP), Reggie Crawford (2.0 IP) have all not allowed a run during the recent stretch.
Big Wink Making Noise.. Third-year captain Chris Winkel has found his stroke the last two weeks. The UConn outfielder is hitting .368 in his last eight games with a double, three home runs and seven RBIs.Â
Stock Rising for Erik.. During the latest 10 game stretch, Erik Stock is hitting .395 (26-38) with three double, one triple and nine RBIs. He also has only struck out three times in 42 AB's.Â
BIG EAST POY Candidate.. Kyler Fedko opened the season with a slow start and was hitting .192 on March 8 but the preseason BIG Co-Preseason POY has since gone 26-54 at the plate with six doubles and four homers and is now hitting .388 on the year. The UConn outfielder has also provided a great glove in the outfield, making numerous big plays in the Huskies outfield.
RollSkies.. The Huskies have won six of their last eight games. Tuesday's 12-0 victory against Boston College may have been the Huskies most complete performance of the season. UConn looks to get some consistency going after beginning the year at 4-10 after playing a grueling schedule. The Huskies will open BIG EAST play next weekend against Georgetown.
Emergence of Gallagher... 2 YR FR Pat Gallagher has had his two best performances in a UConn uniform the last two weeks. The Leominster, Mass native has recorded back-to-back five shutout inning victories against CCSU and Boston College. Against the Blue Devils, Gallagher struck out a career-high nine batters.Â
A-10 Conference Play?... The Huskies enter their third-straight weekend series against an Atlantic-10 opponent this weekend agaianst UMass. UConn won its last two series, two-out-of-three against St. Joseph's and URI. This season the Huskies are 4-3 against A-10 opponents with a loss against Davidson that came at Coastal Carolina.
