BOSTON, Mass. – The No. 3 nationally ranked Northeastern Huskies scored three goals in the second period on the way to dealing the No. 20 ranked UConn Huskies their first loss of the season, 3-0, at Matthews Arena.
Northeastern (3-0-0, 1-0-0 HEA) goaltender Gwyneth Philips stopped all 26 shots she faced on Friday afternoon, 10 in the third period, to earn the win. The Huskies take their first loss on the season, falling to 4-1-0 and 0-1-0 in Hockey East.
After a scoreless first period, NU's Alina Mueller grabbed the game's first goal 3:38 into the second, scoring her fourth of the season off a feed from Maureen Murphy. Northeastern need just 1:08 to take a 2-0 lead as Katy Knoll buried her second on the season.
Northeastern boosted their lead to 3-0 at the 8:40 mark as Skylar Irving got her first of the season coming from Tory Mariano and Kristina Allard. UConn looked to have cut into the 3-0 deficit but a Camryn Wong apparent goal was waived off after review.
The Huskies finished 0-for-3 on the power play and were out shot 33-26 in the loss. Sophomore goaltender Tia Chan made 30 saves in the loss.
The two teams will close out their weekend Hockey East series on Saturday afternoon at Freitas Ice Forum in Storrs. Opening face-off is set for 3 pm.
