Huskies Face Boston U. In Gampel Pavilion Opener

STORRS, Conn. – Fresh off a season-opening victory, the UConn men's basketball team will play its first Gampel Pavilion game of the season on Friday night (6 p.m.), hosting Boston University (FS2).
The Huskies (1-0), who stopped Stonehill, 85-54, on Monday night, will play their first five games of the season at home, alternating between the XL Center in Hartford and Gampel Pavilion on campus in Storrs.
UConn got off to a fast start against Stonehill, breaking out to a 16-5 lead in the opening 8:00, and never looked back. The Huskies used their depth to keep the pressure on throughout the game, steadily widening the gap to reach the final 31-point margin.
Junior Adama Sanogo, the BIG EAST Preseason Player of the Year, led the way with 19 points for UConn, supported by two other double-figure scorers, both of whom came off the bench – redshirt freshman Alex Karaban poured in 13 points and added 3 assists, while junior Hassan Diarra chipped in with 11 points and handed out a game-high 7 assists. Freshman Donovan Clingan was another strong reserve for UConn, hauling in a game-high 7 rebounds, to go with 9 points and 4 blocked shots.
Boston University (1-0) figures to offer a stronger challenge to the Huskies, since Stonehill was playing its first-ever Division I game. BU was picked second in the Patriot League preseason standings and graduate star Walter Whyte was a preseason all-league pick.
Whyte lived up to his advance billing in the Terriers' season opener, a 72-63 win over Northeastern. The 6-6 forward poured in 27 points, including six 3-pointers, and snared 13 rebounds in a dominating performance. The rest of the BU starters included 6-2 Jonas Harper (15 points), 6-9 Nevin Zink, 6-7 Fletcher Tynen, and 6-3 Miles Brewster (6 assists).
UConn is still without the services of junior guard Andre Jackson Jr., who is recovering from a broken pinky on his right hand, while the status of sophomore guard Jordan Hawkins is uncertain after he suffered a hard fall in the first half against Stonehill.
UConn is currently riding an 11-game winning streak at Gampel Pavilion, including a perfect 8-0 season last year.
