STORRS, Conn. – On an emotional senior night, the University of Connecticut women's hockey came away with one point as they would tie #4 Northeastern and fall in a shootout Friday night.
The first period began with both teams trying to push the pace and be the most physical. After multiple penalties by both teams, the players would settle down and let the game come to them. Northeastern would eventually score and get on the board first late in the first period. They would use that momentum to score another to give them the two-goal lead heading into the break.
At the start of the second period, UConn would ramp up their pressure forcing Northeastern to move the puck and eventually turn the puck over. UConn looked to capitalize off these turnovers with goals of their own. Eventually following pressure by senior Danielle Fox, graduate student Morgan Wabick would find fellow graduate student Summer-Rae Dobson who would go top shelf to cut the Northeastern lead to one. Northeastern however would respond only two minutes after the UConn goal to extend their lead once again to two.
UConn wouldn't back down as they would continue to pressure the Northeastern defense and puck handlers. Due to the constant pressure, UConn would draw a penalty midway through the second period. Shortly into the power play, the Wabick twins would once again connect as graduate student Taylor Wabick would find graduate student Morgan Wabick who would fire the puck on net and score cut the Northeastern lead to one. With that assist, Taylor Wabick would break the program record for most career assists as a defenseman.
Northeastern would capitalize on a UConn penalty scoring another in the second to extend their lead. Northeastern's physical play would catch up to them as back-to-back penalties to end the second period would put them two players down to begin the third.
The third period began with UConn instantly jumping on the attack while on the power play. Down two goals, they would look to capitalize on the player advantages. 40 seconds into the third period, graduate student Taylor Wabick would fire the slap shot right over the goaltender's shoulder to make it a one goal game once again. UConn would use the momentum gained from the power play to try and tie the game. Midway through the third period graduate student Natalie Snodgrass would take the puck the length of the ice and be denied on the breakaway attempt. With the puck loose Claire Peterson would fire it on net and after the initial save, the puck would bounce to sophomore Jada Habisch who would put it home to tie the game at four. Both teams had chances to take the lead, but strong goaltending play would keep the game tied. Senior goaltender Samantha Carpentier-Yelle would head into the overtime period with 29 total saves and end the game with 33.
In the overtime period Northeastern would come out firing trying to end the game. Samantha Carpentier-Yelle would stand strong preventing any hopes of a Northeastern overtime victory. Northeastern's best chances of the overtime period came when back-to-back shots would ring off the pipe and bounce out. With time running out, Samantha Carpentier-Yelle would make two huge back-to-back saves on breakaways to keep the game scoreless and force a shootout. In the overtime two goals by Northeastern would seal the win as UConn would fall in the shootout.
