ICE CHIPS
- The UConn Huskies take on the Northeastern Huskies in another critical Hockey East home and home this weekend. UConn heads up to Matthews Arena for a 7 pm match-up on NESN+ and returns home to the XL Center on Saturday afternoon for a 3 pm face-off available on the CW20 throughout Connecticut.
- UConn moved up a spot in this week's DCU/USCHO national poll coming in tied with Providence for 19th in the top-20 rankings. The Huskies also received votes in this week's USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Top-15 Coaches' Poll. Northeastern enters the weekend ranked No. 15 in both polls.
- The Huskies have moved up to 14th in the current PairWise rankings, tied with conference member Boston University. Northeastern sits at No. 18 headed into the weekend. Hockey East currently has seven teams sitting inside the top-20 in the PairWise as the hunt for a NCAA postseason spot heats up down the stretch (UMass 9th, UConn/BU 14th, UMass Lowell 16th, Northeastern 18th, Providence 19th, Merrimack 20th)..
- With two weekends and four games left in the regular season, UConn enters the weekend series sitting tied for third place in the Hockey East standings with Merrimack, both at 38 points. The Huskies are just two points behind Massachusetts and UMass Lowell for first place in the conference. Northeastern is three points behind UConn, tied with BU The league standings currently see just seven points separating first and seventh place.
- The Huskies sit at 13-7-0 in Hockey East, their highest conference win total since joining the league in 2014-15. The Huskies 17 overall wins are their highest win total since Mike Cavanaugh's first season on the bench in 2013-14 (18-14-4), the program's last season in Atlantic Hockey.
- Northeastern leads the all-time series with the Huskies, 12-6-0 but it's been all UConn of late. After losing the first 10 match-ups with Northeastern, the Huskies have won six of the last eight including three-straight heading into Friday night. UConn took the first meeting this season, a 5-3 decision at Matthews Arena in October.
- UConn is coming off a weekend split with nationally ranked UMass last weekend, losing 2-1 at home and getting a 4-2 win on the road. The Huskies improved to 9-2-0 on the road in Hockey East this season.
- Sophomore Ryan Tverberg had a hand in all four UConn goals in the win, scoring his team-leading 13th on the season and dishing three assists for a career-best four point night. It was his team-best eighth multi-point game this season and the Huskies are 8-0-0 when he puts two or more points on the stat sheet this season. Tverberg was tabbed the Hockey East Co-Player of the Week on Monday for his efforts.
- Senior Jachym Kondelik takes a season-long five game point streak (3g/5a) into this weekend's series. His three assists last weekend gave the senior captain 100 points for his career, the most by a player during the Hockey East era (2014-present). Kondelik is the 29th Husky all-time to get to 100 career points, the eighth during the Division I era (1998-present) and the first since the 2013-14 season. He has moved up to tied for sixth on the Huskies Division I career points list. His 73 career assists gives him the UConn Division I record for career assists.
- This season, he has 29 points, a career-high mark, and his 11 goals marks the first time hitting the double digit goal mark in his career. He has 29 points (11g/18a) rank fifth in Hockey East in scoring and his 18 assists is ranked eighth. Tverberg is right on his heels with 28 points (13g/15a), sixth in the league in scoring. His 13 goals are tied for fifth. Kondelik and Tverberg are candidates for the 2022 Hobey Baker Award. Fan voting is open now and will run through March 6. - Graduate student Darion Hanson is close to setting the UConn school record for wins in a season. Hanson has started all but one game this season and is 17-11-0. The school Division I record for wins in a season is 18, set by Marc Senerchia (1999-00) and the overall school mark is 19, held by Damen Dawson (1991-92) and Doug Michals (1992-93). Hanson owns a 2.29 goals against average and a .922 save percentage He has played the second most minutes by a goaltender in the league this year and his 752 saves are second most as well.
This Season vs. Northeastern
October 26, 2021 @ Matthews Arena - W, 5-2
- UConn sophomore Nick Capone scored a pair of goals and added an assist to lead the Huskies to a 5-3 Hockey East win at No. 20 Northeastern at Matthews Arena back in October.
- After a quick Northeastern goal in the first period UConn scored three-straight to take a 3-1 lead after the first 20 minutes, two coming from Capone around senior Ryan Wheeler's first of the season and the Huskies never looked back.
- Freshman Chase Bradley and senior Marc Gatcomb both scored in the second answering NU power play goals to keep the Husky lead at two heading to the third. UConn's defense took over in the third period, outshooting Northeastern 14-8 and killing off a power play to seal the win.
- Gatcomb added an assist to his totals while sophomore Ryan Tverberg picked up a pair of assists. UConn held a 41-31 shot edge and grad student goaltender Darion Hanson made 28 stops in the win.
- Northeastern got a goal and assist from both Aidan McDonough and Justin Hryckowian. Goaltender Devon Levi made 36 saves.
