STORRS, Conn. – Taking Morrone Stadium for the first time this season, the UConn women's lacrosse team overpowered Cornell in the second half as it claimed a 20-14 victory on Sunday afternoon.
With the score tied up at 8-all at the break, UConn scored six unanswered goals to pull ahead, and senior Lia LaPrise scored six times in the second half alone to guide the Huskies to their fifth straight win.
LaPrise matched a career high with her six goals and led all players with eight points on the day. Seniors Grace Coon, Sydney Watson and junior Kate Shaffer also recorded hat tricks, while senior Landyn White made 13 saves in between the pipes.
Cornell eked out a 5-4 edge at the end of the first quarter, though seniors Stephanie Palmucci and Coon ripped back-to-back goals to start the second frame and give UConn its first lead. The Big Red reclaimed the upper hand until Watson delivered a diving goal to close the half and tie the score at 8-8.
Watson stayed hot by spinning around a defender to put the Huskies back on top to start the third, and LaPrise followed with a solo strike. Junior Kate Shaffer ripped two straight goals within a 17-second span before the duo of Watson and LaPrise struck again to push out a six-goal lead, 14-8, midway through the frame.
The Big Red went on a 5-1 run to cut the advantage to 15-13 early in the fourth quarter. LaPrise caught fire from there, slotting four of UConn's next five goals to put away the game.
UConn will have a week off until it returns to the field on Sunday, March 13 at 1 p.m. at Albany.
